While there are many methods that can be used to straighten crooked teeth, Invisalign is one of the most popular. There are a ton of benefits that you can get from Invisalign that don’t come with more traditional options like metal braces. Stewart Dental Group, a dentist in Charlotte, NC, discusses the benefits of Invisalign.
What is Invisalign?
Invisalign is a method of straightening teeth and providing help with mild to moderate orthodontic issues. Instead of using brackets and wires like traditional braces, clear plastic aligners are used to slowly shift your teeth into place. The plastic is designed to be comfortable but stands up to daily wear and tear. Typically, each set of aligners is worn for about two weeks.
The Benefits of Invisalign
For starters, Invisalign is much less visible on your teeth than metal braces. The plastic used is extremely thin and the aligners are perfectly fitted to match your smile. It can be hard to even tell you’re wearing anything unless you’re looking for it specifically. The treatment time with Invisalign is usually shorter, too, at around 12 months.
Invisalign is better for your overall oral health, too. When you have braces you have to learn how to properly brush and floss around the brackets and wires. If you aren’t getting in these nooks and crannies, it can lead to tooth decay and staining in these areas. With Invisalign, you take out the aligners in order to brush your teeth normally and clean the aligners as well.
Because you can remove the aligners, you don’t have any issues with your diet either. There are certain foods you can’t eat with braces because they get stuck in the hardware or can break a bracket or wire. There aren’t any foods you have to give up when you have Invisalign because you take the aligners out when you’re eating.
Lastly, the material that the clear aligners are made out of is designed to be comfortable and to avoid causing irritation to the soft tissues in your mouth. With metal braces, wax often has to be used to protect the soft tissue. The brackets and wires can pinch the gums and dig into the soft insides of your cheeks and lips.
The Invisalign Process
To start, one of our dentists will conduct a cosmetic dentistry consultation with you. We’ll talk to you about your cosmetic goals, budget, and will perform an oral examination. We want to make sure Invisalign is the right treatment for you. If we decide it’s right for you, we’ll take a mold of your teeth so the aligners can be custom-made.
When they’re ready, you can start with your first set of aligners. They’ll be changed about once every two weeks as your teeth slowly move into place. Depending on the severity of your case, treatment can last from six months to eighteen months.
